Using the InFocus 3D projector
The ceiling mounted InFocus projector in front of the room can be used to display regular presentations from a laptop or workstation (w12
) but it is also capable of displaying 3D content. The 3D functionality of the projector can be used either for displaying 3D content from the Linux workstation (w12.keck2.ucsd.edu
) or from the Blu-ray player connected to the projector in front of the room.
Using the Linux workstation
- Turn the projector on using the wall switch on the right wall in front of the room
- make sure the Blu-ray video scaler is Off. It is located on top of the BD player in the lower shelf behind the plexiglass. The red LED should be lighted. If the green LED is on you need to turn the unit off by pressing the power on/off button on the front panel.
- Log in to
w12.keck2.ucsd.edu
workstation - this is the workstation closest to the projector screen in front of the room. - After you log in there the projector should show part of your linux desktop. If it is not see troubleshooting steps below.
- Open a terminal vindow and start NVidia application
nvidia-settings
. This application will allow you to change resolution of the projected image and also will help you to turn on 3D mode of the projector. - Now the projector is ready to display 3D content from your application.
- To actually see the 3D effect you need to put on one pair of 3D glasses and turn them on. This is done by briefly pushing the On button on the left inside of the glasses' frame. The image should go dark for about 1 sec indicating the glasses are on. You don't need to turn the glasses off after you are done, they will turn off automatically,
Troubleshooting
If there is no image on the projector screen make sure:
- the projector is on
- the Optima video scaler is off. The scaler is located on top of the BD player, the red LED must be on. If it is not turn the unit off by pressing the power on/off button. The green LED should change to red.
- you are logged in to the
w12
workstation
If there is an image but it is distorted or wrong resolution - use nvidia-settings
application to change the resolution.
Using the Blu-ray player
- Turn on the BD player using remote.
- Turn on the video scaler which is located on the top of the BD player.
- Use the remote to open the BD player tray and load DVD or BD disc.
- The projector should automatically switch to
HDMI source
and display the BD player video. - Please don't forget to turn off both the BD player and scaler after you are done.
Applications to display 3D content
VMD
To enable stereo in VMD load your molecule and then go to Display → Stereo→ Quadbuffered
. The molecule representation on the projector screen should change to a slightly shifted double image. Put on the stereo glasses and turn them on. You should be able to see the image in 3D now. If the image looks a little strange and there is no depth perspective try to swap the stereo eyes: Display→ Stereo Eye Swap → On
.
Schrodinger
Start maestro
, load your molecule and turn on stereo by checking the stereo option in View → Stereo
.
Dino
Dino is a movie player which allows to display 3D content.
